Ironically, the first place I'm going to review is not in the Twin Cities. Since it's Decaf Adventures, one of my adventures brought me to Breckenridge, CO, for some time hiking and rejuvenating before the busy season at work. And as part of that, I had to scope out the local coffee scene.
I generally hiked most of the mornings and ended up doing better on the hikes than I planned which landed me back in town around noon so after lunch, I'd go out and look for some good decaf drinks. I struck out the first day, found some decaf coffee, but it wasn't the best. So with our short trip of just three days, I wasn't taking any chances. I searched around, looking for a highly rated coffee shop in the area, and found myself at The Crown. It won Best of Breckendrige for Coffee Shops two years in a row, so I knew the odds were in my favor for it to be good. In addition to fabulous coffee, they also have strong commitments to supporting sustainability, local artists, and are a local company actively engaged in the year-round Breckenridge community.
It was busy even for a Friday morning with only a few seats available. The shop is so well designed and warm -- it really is an inviting space. While it does have plenty of seating, it does fill up fast with people munching and working. There is a great fireplace space with a low table, couch, and chairs that looks like it would be fabulous to work or read at during the winter. They also do have a couple of outdoor spots for sitting out in the mountain sun, but only a few, so it fills up fast. However, there is a back patio too, so if the front is filled up, check the back.
They do have decaf espresso available and made me an absolutely killer decaf caramel latte. Not overly sweet, still able to taste the espresso flavors with just the right balance of caramel flavor. Just chatting with the workers, you can really tell they care about their craft and the quality of the drinks they make. While I'm not a tumeric fan, the Golden Latte sounded very good and I didn't ask about espresso options for it, but Cubano Latte includes espresso brewed with cinnamon and sugar. Sounds simply amazing and I'm a bit sad I didn't ask about it.
They also have a wide variety of foods available too -- breakfast and lunch foods. While I didn't personally try any of them, the people around me did and they looked absolutely fabulous. The breakfast sandwiches in particular looked fabulous and are available with extra add-ons like avocado to really elevate the experience. While writing this post the guy next to me raved to his partner that the food was "superb" and he "the bagels were out of this world". So it must be pretty darn good!
Overall I highly recommend The Crown for decaf coffee, and it does sound like the food is great too :) If we were staying here longer, I would definitely be back.
